Mavernie graduated from Canterbury School of Art (now UCA) in 1987 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art and went on to complete her Masters in Illustration at the Royal College of Art in 1989. Mavernie is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has had extensive experience teaching and leading Fine Art on a range of degree courses in and around Kent and Hampshire. Mavernie has worked across a range of disciples throughout her career and her practice has included painting, drawing and printmaking. She has contributed chapters on Frantz Fanon and Georges Didi-Huberman for Routledge’s ‘Fifty Key Texts in Art History (ed. Pooke and Newell, 2012). More recently her artistic practice and research centres around questions of cultural identity and representation and she now works collaboratively with Chris Hunt developing pieces that include performance, film and sound. Dark Light was performed at the Whitstable Biennale 2018.
